Dysport in Wisconsin

Used in Europe since the early 1990s, Dysport® is a simple, effective, non-surgical treatment that works by relaxing facial muscles on the forehead, reducing and smoothing away frown-lines and wrinkles. Dysport is an alternative to Botox.

Dysport received FDA approval for temporary improvement in the appearance of moderate to severe glabellar lines (frown lines between your eyebrows) on April 30, 2009. Dysport was the second drug to receive such approval from the FDA (the first to receive approval was Botox in 2002). Dysport treatments are offered at our Middleton and Appleton, Wisconsin locations.

Comparing the two botulinum toxin type A products, some clients prefer Dysport over Botox because they experience a quicker onset and/or they recall the effect lasting a bit longer than they experienced with Botox. Many clients report having the same experience regardless of which product was injected.

Brand awareness and special offers have the greatest influence on a client’s selection of which botulinum toxin type A product they’ll receive. However, you should not have a Dysport treatment if you: are allergic to Dysport or any of its ingredients, are allergic to cow’s milk protein, had an allergic reaction to any other botulinum toxin product, such as Botox®, or have a skin infection at the planned injection site.

Both women and men can receive Dysport injections. Dysport is not for all types of wrinkles, but is most commonly used to treat lines and wrinkles. Dysport may be a treatment option for you if you are concerned with one or more of these areas.

  • Dysport treatments can be performed in a number of areas on your face, including:

    • Lines around the eyes (crow’s feet)
    • Between your brows
    • Smile lines
    • Forehead lines
    • Neck bands

Dysport treament is a safe and simple non-surgical procedure that has no recovery time. A few tiny injections are made in the predetermined area, which are virtually painless. Wrinkles and lines will be reduced within one to two weeks post treatment. Results can last up to 4 months. Our team strives to provide natural-looking, youthful results.

Your skin requires a tailored program of care to optimize its health and appearance. At your consultation, one of our Medical Aesthetics Specialists will gather information from you about your skin concerns, examine your skin and explain what they discover. They will help you prioritize and achieve your best skin by preparing a treatment plan that ensures any skin treatments you choose are provided in a manner that is as effective and as safe as possible. Our Medical Aesthetics Specialists have trained under Double-Board Certified Facial Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Richard Parfitt. Their extensive knowledge of non-surgical procedures, skin care and skin rejuvenation treatments ensures they are skilled specialists in your chosen treatment. Consultations can take place at either of our locations in Appleton, WI or Middleton, WI.

If you are a new client of AestheticA Skin Health Center and are interested in a specific treatment, time may be allotted for the consultation and treatment to be completed in one appointment. If you are a previous client of AestheticA, but have not been seen by our clinic within a year, a brief follow-up will be included in your appointment to discuss your previous treatment(s) or any new skin concerns you may have.

How much time is required in the office for a Dysport treatment?

Both of our Middleton and Appleton, Wisconsin locations require an initial consultation to ensure you are fully informed prior to receiving any treatment. You may choose to schedule the consultation and treatment appointments to be completed on separate days or on the same day. Please allow up to 1 hour and 15 minutes when scheduling the consultation and treatment on the same day.

The time it takes to inject Dysport is less than 10 minutes.

If you are an existing client at AestheticA, but have not been in for treatment for one or more years, a 15-minute complimentary consultation will be scheduled prior to your treatment to discuss your previous treatment and experience, along with any new skin or aesthetic concerns you may have.

How long does Dysport last?

Our clients typically start to see the results within one to two weeks of receiving the treatment. Results can last up to 4 months.

What is the downtime for Dysport?

As with any injection into the skin a small “bump” and redness may occur at the site of injection. These will correct themselves within 30 minutes or less. Most people return to work or social activities immediately post procedure with Dysport. You need to avoid pushing or rubbing on the treatment area, as well as reclining or laying down flat for approximately 4 hours post Dysport. During this same time frame, you are encouraged to exercise the muscles within the treatment area as much as possible.

How much product will I need?

Dysport is measured by the unit. The number of units necessary for an effective treatment varies, both by the individual and the area treated. Men usually need a few more units than women to achieve the same effect.

What is the difference between Dysport and dermal fillers (such as Juvederm and Restylane)?

Though both treatments are commonly used to soften the look of wrinkles, Dysport treats the cause of the wrinkle, the contracting muscle, while dermal fillers are used to correct the wrinkle itself, the indent in the skin. Choosing to relax the muscle, and “plump up” the skin, achieves a more substantial and longer lasting correction than either treatment alone.

What are the risks with Dysport?

The most common side effect from a Dysport treatment is actually from the needle itself. As with all injections, there is a risk of bruising and redness. Other side effects include temporary headache, and some soreness or tenderness at the injection site. More severe side effects can include a rash or allergic reaction, and possibly some drooping of facial muscles near treated areas, usually as a result of “spreading”. For a full list of potential side effects, you should schedule a consultation with one of our medical aesthetics specialists and review an informed consent form.

Is there a cost for a consultation?

To see one of our Medical Aesthetics Specialists, the cost for a skin consultation is $50. To see Dr. Parfitt, the cost for your skin consultation is $125. This consultation fee is applied to your account to use towards products or treatments at either AestheticA Skin Health Center or Parfitt Facial Cosmetic Surgery Center. This one-time cost applies only to your initial consultation; therefore all future follow-up consultative appointments, regardless of the provider seen, are free.

  • To avoid bruising it is best not to take any
  • medications that cause blood thinning such as aspirin, ibuprofen, Advil, Motrin, or Vitamin E for 2 days prior and 2 days after treatment.
  • Do not use Botox/Dysport if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, are allergic to any of its ingredients, or suffer from any neurological disorders. Please inform your clinician if you have any questions about this prior to the procedure.
  • Sunburned skin is difficult to treat so avoid exposure to the sun.
  • Avoid Waxing, bleaching, tweezing, or the use of hair removal cream on the area to be treated for 3 days prior to treatment.
  • Inform your clinician if you have a history of Perioral Herpes to receive advice on antiviral therapy prior to treatment.
  • Always inform your clinician of all medications you may be taking as well as your medical history.
  • You may have bruises in the areas treated with Botox / Dysport. This is normal.
  • It will take up to two weeks for you to experience the full effect of the Botox/Dysport treatment. Remain patient. It takes time for the muscles to lose strength and the lines to fade following Botox / Dysport treatments.
  • It is best to try to exercise your treated muscles for 1-2 hours after treatment (e.g. practice frowning, raising your eyebrows, or squinting). This helps to work Botox/Dysport Cosmetic into your muscles. Although thought to help, it will NOT impact your treatment negatively if you forget to do this.
  • Do NOT rub, massage or apply excessive pressure to the treated areas for 4 hours after your treatment. Do NOT practice Yoga or any type of strenuous exercise for 4 hours after treatment. Also, avoid facials or saunas for 4 hours after your treatment. This will minimize the risk of raising your blood pressure and therefore minimize the risk of temporary bruising. Feel free to shower and go about most other regular daily activities.
  • Do NOT lie down for 4 hours after treatment. This is to avoid the risk of pressure on the treated areas (from your pillow) and to avoid the risk of having the area rubbed accidentally.
  • Be assured that any tiny bumps or marks will go away within a few minutes to an hour. If you need to apply make-up within 4 hours after your treatment, only use a GENTLE touch to avoid rubbing the treated area.

Dysport is a temporary procedure and at first, you may find that your treatment results will last approximately 3 or 4 months. If you maintain your treatment appointments with the frequency recommended by your doctor, the duration of each treatment result may last longer than 4 months.
